Ummi Lounge Chair
The Ummi Lounge Chair explores maternity, softness, and the quiet strength of femininity through form and material. The name Ummi, meaning “my mother” in Arabic and rooted in my mother tongue, carries a deep emotional resonance connected to care, origin, and protection. This meaning forms the conceptual foundation of the chair, translating the physical and emotional language of motherhood into shape, proportion, and texture.
The chair’s silhouette is composed of generous rounded volumes that evoke warmth and protection. A full, grounded seat supports a softly spherical backrest, while the armrests extend forward in an open and welcoming gesture. Continuous curves define the design, creating a gentle visual rhythm that contrasts with the rigid geometries often found in furniture. The proportions subtly form a pear-like profile in which the seat carries more visual weight than the backrest, quietly referencing femininity and fertility.
Materiality reinforces this balance between tenderness and strength. Upholstered in a soft wool bouclé, the chair invites touch and diffuses light, creating a sense of warmth close to the body. A sculptural oak frame bends around the upholstered form in smooth arcs, grounding the softness with calm structural stability.
Ummi becomes a subtle feminist statement, valuing care, comfort, and embodied experience as sources of strength within design.
